The Shanghai zoological park is of significant importance due to its long drawn history. It was first developed in the 1890s as a livery stable, to be subsequently purchased by a group of merchants who then converted it into a huge and well-maintained golf course- the Hung-Jao Golf Course. After the Chinese Communist Party took over Shanghai, similar to what had happened to other such clubs, the Hung-Jao Golf Club was taken by its new government and converted into a zoological park, then called Xijiao Park. Subsequently as time passed, the park was developed and expanded and later renamed in 1980 as the Shanghai Zoological Park.
