Shanghai Zoo history

The Shanghai zoological park is of significant importance due to its long drawn history. It was first developed in the 1890s as a livery stable, to be subsequently purchased by a group of merchants who then converted it into a huge and well-maintained golf course- the Hung-Jao Golf Course. After the Chinese Communist Party took over Shanghai, similar to what had happened to other such clubs, the Hung-Jao Golf Club was taken by its new government and converted into a zoological park, then called Xijiao Park. Subsequently as time passed, the park was developed and expanded and later renamed in 1980 as the Shanghai Zoological Park.

Today, the zoo is spread over a vast area of size around 200 acres, and hosts more than 6000 special cases including 600 rare ones. In case you are thinking of visiting the park, make sure to book Shanghai Zoo ticket in advance for the best experience. .
